Now to get out the grinder and go after some rust...and grab a few new front fenders. Engine must have been rebuilt at some point, fires off way fast for a diesel in winter, and compression is high and even. Have to have some paint mixed up too, American Racing Grey is not fit for a 2 tone scheme.

Now on to first world problems...cap on or cap off? I am thinking I am going to rip it off and sell it, but it has kept the bed in awesome shape. Oh and the sunroof doesnt leak a drop!!!

Keep it on! I've never seen one with a cap on!

Cap on: Do you need the utility of a protected cargo area?

Cap off: Do you just want a cool looking truck that will occasionally haul cargo?

I think this would look way better without the cap, but the cap would be useful. If you don't need it, sell it.

I have the Fox wagon for protected cargo space. Guess it is cap off! Wonder what the market is for a cap for one of these though. Maybe I will keep it in case

If you've got somewhere to put it and it's not worth much you might as well hold onto it.

Congrats, I certainly would have hit my wallet for that.

I tried cap-on for 3 months, decided cap-off. Cap is always ready to go, though, for serious cargo,
but I liked the increased visibility. Keep it, have the option available.

Who'd buy it anyway, but another VW rabbit pickup owner?

yeah my thoughts exactly. Cap is pretty good quality Protect-O-Top, and the shocks on the hatch still work! I just realized the cab rear window is a slider on it, so I am thinking I want to use that in the spring

Yeah, I held title to a Rabbit pickup for a few weeks, realized it was too much project. (Still have a rabbit vert sans motor and transmission awaiting inspiration) You done good.

Nah, I got hold of a top for the Brat (the only known 'cure'* for VW Pickup Tularemia) and finally figured out a method of attaching it. (The seller of the top had drilled bolt-holes; I used ratcheting tie-downs. No problems, and vintage metal intact)

While they have their uses, it kind of delineates 'vintage pickup owner' from 'hoarder with old weird truck'.

I see the controversy here being whether or not to put the round headlight front end on. . :P

*VW Tularemia cannot be completely cured, but its symptoms can be suppressed.

From Poor Richards' How To Keep Your VW Rabbit Alive. If you do not have, you should.

If you take it off and sell it, get the bed line-x'd or rhino'd. I stand behind line-x that stuff is great.

you just reminded me I have a roundy setup up in my garage rafters I was going to put on an A1 GLI that i realized the same thing about...so much work that would have taken. Shit good call!

Oh and on your cabrio. Go 1.6 TD in it with a 5 speed. Love that swap

Yes.. I slowly realized you're a serial VW owner. (I'm on #14 or so, more if you count ones I found for friends) We need a Oppo garage node so everyone can cross-reference their cars.
